Sage Scott and her younger brother Desi arrive at their first summer at Camp Rock. The siblings’ relationship is strained as Desi is upset that Sage had broken up their band to attend music school to pursue her dreams. They meet drummer Cliff, cellist Rosie, aspiring dancer Callie, popular social influencer Maddie and her backup dancers, Daniel and Danielle.
Meanwhile, the reunited Connect 3 - Shane, Nate, and Jason Gray - are preparing for tour, but their manager Lark then tells them that the opening act has broken up and insists that the band find a replacement, prompting Shane to suggest they go to Camp Rock. They decide to hold a competition at Camp Rock, consisting of three challenges and Final Jam, overseen by Lark with Callie as her assistant. In addition, Connie Torres, the camp director, forbids the usage of phones to prevent leaks and confiscates the campers’ phones, warning that anyone found with one will be removed from the competition.
Sage is motivated to win Final Jam to kickoff her music career. After the announcement, she runs into the mysterious Fletch Robinson, who has just arrived at camp in a police car, causing wild rumors to spread. Fletch joins Cliff’s cabin, and they quickly befriend each other. Meanwhile, Sage overhears Rosie singing and encourages her to enter Final Jam. Rosie downplays her ability, citing her family of classical musicians, but she reconsiders and decides to enter the competition.
The first challenge has the campers perform Connect 3’s song “Play My Music”. Sage, Desi, Cliff, Rosie, Fletch, and Maddie and her backup dancers all passed, though Sage is told by Lark that her performance is too stiff, which worries her. During a songwriting workshop, Sage is paired with Fletch, who praises Sage during their assessment and performs a song dedicated to her. Meanwhile, Desi finds Callie dancing in the woods, who invites him to join, but he declines since he cannot dance. Later, Sage admits to Callie that she has feelings for Fletch, but is determined not be distracted from the competition. On her way to a campfire, Sage finds a lyric book underneath a floorboard in her cabin that belonged to Mitchie.
The second challenge is a dance-focused task led by Callie while Lark eliminates anyone who fails to meet the standards of the challenge. Sage saves Desi from being eliminated by distracting Lark, causing her to bump into Maddie. Lark eliminates Maddie and her backup dancers, infuriating the former. Sage, Desi, Fletch, Rosie, and Cliff become the final contestants. Desi asks Callie to give him dance lessons, to which she agrees. Maddie lures Sage, Fletch, Desi, Rosie and Cliff to arts cabin, revealing that she has stolen and "bedazzled" the campers' belongings. The campers get into a messy paint fight, which is quickly broken up by Connie.
Lark introduces the final challenge: the finalists must stay inside a camp bus for 24 hours, and anyone who leaves will be eliminated. By nightfall, Sage and the others bond by sharing their insecurities, fears, and dreams, leading them to perform an impromptu song together. Unbeknownst to them, Maddie secretly records their performance to leak online to ruin the competition.
Later that night, Sage and Fletch share a moment, in which Fletch reveals that he is waiting a call from the legal courts to decide where he will live after his mother’s death and shows Sage that he still has his phone since no one confiscated it due to him arriving late. Sage promises not to tell anyone he has his phone.
The next day in the dining hall, Connie finds Sage with Mitchie's lyric book and offers words of encouragement, which inspires Sage. Sage later finds Desi dancing and the two reconcile before the finalists are summoned to Connie's office. A leak video of their performance on the bus is circulating on the internet, and Connie and Lark threaten to disqualify all of them from the competition if they do not confess who has possession of their phone. Afraid, Sage prompts Fletch to confess, but he insists to Connie and Lark that he is not responsible for the leaked video. Sage apologizes to Fletch, who forgives her. He informs her that he will still be able to compete since Connie and Lark discovered that Maddie was behind the leak.
As preparations for Final Jam are underway, Connie receives a surprised visit from Mitchie, who requested a night off tour to come and watch Final Jam. Connect 3 returns to Camp Rock to act as judges, impressed by the finalists’ performances. Before Sage’s performance, she gives a speech dedicated to her friends and declares that she would rather have them be picked as the opening act for Connect 3 than herself. As Sage begins her song, Desi, Fletch, Rosie, and Cliff join her on stage as her band.
As Connect 3 go backstage to deliberate, they are indecisive about who should be the winner. Mitchie approaches them and offers them advice, leading to Connect 3 announcing that all five finalists will be on tour with them as a group. As the group celebrate with a performance, Sage sees Mitchie and they two share a wave before the latter departs.
